Why is it called Mamèmi?
Mèmi is how my grandmother from my mum’s side was called. Her full name was Noemi. La Mèmi. “Ma Mèmi” stands for “My Mèmi”, as you would say it in her dialect. I loved her, because I kept loving my grandmother Augusta, from my dad’s side, after she passed away when I was in my late teens. Nonna Augusta instilled in me all the strength I needed to stay alive and live. Nonna Noemi received all the attention and loving care I could not show to Nonna Augusta. Both were born in the 1920s, both represent a past that I have probably idealized, which I would not like to return to, but which I would like to valorise. All their stories from the pre-war period were about a simple life. The same one that I tried to reinterpret by choosing where to live and what to surround myself with. Mèmi was sweet, romantic and modest. Her childhood based on devotion made her an elderly woman capable of blessing life and people. I feel her blessing on me and on my project.
